Lights are the final addition to a Christmas tree, and the part that you have to get exactly right. Lights transform your tree from being boring and dull to being dynamic and fun, and you have the flexibility to choose any colors you want to fit your decor and personal style. If your lights aren’t installed properly, the display can look uneven, messy and take away from the beauty of your other decorations. This guide will help you avoid the most common mistakes made when wrapping lights around the tree, and show you how to wrap them perfectly.

Before Getting Started
Consider these tips before you start lighting your tree:
1. Make Sure Your Power Source is Safe
Whether you’re using your lights inside or outside, the power source must be safe. To avoid risks like overloads, short circuits or damage to the lights or bulbs, use a GFCI outlet/breaker that cuts power during ground faults.

2. Track How Many Strands Connect to Each Other
To ensure the process goes smoothly, you also need to make sure you know how many strands to connect in series. Limit to three strands, and aim for 600 bulbs per strand.

How to String Lights on a Christmas Tree
When you wrap the Christmas lights, make sure you follow the main rule of highlighting the glow, and hiding the wires.
1. Start from the Bottom
This is simple: start with the first strand— the one that plugs into the main power, by wrapping it around the trunk at the base, and work your way up to the highest branches. This stops the wires from being messy and distracting from the glow of the lights.

2. Wrap the Lights Around the Branches
Once you’ve finished the previous step, start wrapping a single branch. Threading the wire behind small twigs can help give a cleaner look, and the key is to wrap from the inside out. Begin near the trunk, work towards the tip, and then move onto the next branch, wrapping back in towards the trunk. Wrapping each branch in this way means that the wires are hidden and the lights have a richer effect.

3. Step Back and Review Your Work
After wrapping, step back and look at your lights from a distance. Walk around it slowly and in darkness so you can see the flow of lights perfectly. If you see a spot that is dark, fill it with a strand to even it out.
